In their book The Fallacy Detective, in the Introduction, Nathaniel Bluedorn and Hans Bluedorn state that “a fallacy is an error in logic – a place where someone has made a mistake in his or her thinking”.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a fallacy as a false or mistaken idea, an often plausible argument using a false or invalid inference.
The Bluedorn brothers state that the goals for the reader of their book is as follows:
- Know how to spot bad reasoning
- Put a higher value on good reasoning
- Know how to avoid fallacies in your own reasoning
In striving to become a fair-minded thinker, seeking the truth is primary. The ability to spot errors in logic or arguments using false or invalid inferences is one of the most significant skills that should be developed.
